Powering a New Civic Landmark

Article by: Kirt Svedin - Project Manager

Being part of the new Lehi City Hall & Library project has been a rewarding experience from start to finish. Projects like this don’t come around often, the kind that will serve an entire community for decades, and I’m grateful I had the opportunity to be part of it alongside such a dedicated team.

A HUB FOR CITY ENRICHMENT

This building brings together so many important functions in one place. It will serve as the home for city leadership, provide space for public gatherings, and offer a significantly expanded library designed to meet the needs of a growing city. Knowing the role this facility will play in people’s daily lives makes the work feel meaningful in a way that goes beyond just completing a job.

From an electrical perspective, this was no small effort. Over the course of the project, we installed more than 229,000 feet of cabling and nearly 95,000 feet of conduit, all supporting a 277/480V, 1600A system that keeps the building running. There were nearly 23,000 manhours put into this project, and every one of those hours reflects the effort, skill, and commitment of the crew.

Navigating Project Dynamics

Like any job of this size, it came with its challenges. Partway through construction, major portions of the exterior wall framing and roof had to be redesigned and reengineered. On top of that, delays with window installation slowed down progress and pushed back commissioning. There were moments where it would have been easy to get frustrated, but the team stayed focused and kept moving forward. That consistency made all the difference.

What stands out most to me isn’t just what we built, but how we built it. Over the course of 22,782 manhours, there were no lost time incidents or recordable injuries. That says a lot about the people on this job. Everyone looked out for one another, took the time to do things the right way, and never lost sight of the importance of going home safe at the end of the day. That’s something I’m especially proud of.

Rising to the challenge

This project also wouldn’t have been successful without strong leadership in the field. Kameron Lyman did an outstanding job as superintendent, working through the constant changes and keeping the job on track. His ability to handle challenges head-on and support the crew made a big impact.

There are a couple others who deserve to be recognized as well. Cameron Wilson stepped into a complicated lighting control system that no one was familiar with and took it upon himself to learn it from the ground up. That kind of initiative doesn’t go unnoticed. Sylus Kipling has been part of this job since day one and provided steady leadership in site work throughout the entire project. Having people like that on a team makes a difference every single day.

A commited team

At its peak, we had 16 electricians on site, all working toward the same goal. It took coordination, patience, and a lot of hard work to get here. Looking back, it’s the people and the way they showed up each day that I’ll remember most.

I’m proud of what was accomplished on this project and thankful to have been part of it. Facilities like this become part of the community’s identity, and it means something to know that our team at GSL Electric had a hand in building it.
