APPRENTICE ELECTRICIAN
Apprentice Electrician
Electrical apprentices learn the trade through a combination of field experience, classroom work (either in class or online), and lab work. Typically, they must complete 8,000 hours of on-the-job field experience, eight semesters of apprenticeship coursework and lab work, and pass the journeyman exam to become licensed journeyman electricians.
What skills are required of an Apprentice Electrician?
Working knowledge of DC calculations, batteries, AC voltages, and electrical parts.
Ability to bend and install EMT conduit, use testers safely, and understand switching schemes.
Proficiency in installing rigid conduit, wiring motor controls, interpreting blueprints, and rigging wire.
Understanding of the National Electrical Code, motor controls, and high voltage safety.
Advanced motor control, UPS installations, and basic estimating procedures by the fourth year.
